History
The Cayman Islands were colonized from Jamaica by the British during the 18th and 19th
centuries. Administered by Jamaica since 1863, they remained a British dependency after
1962 when the former became independent.

Dive Cayman
Nestled in the calm, turquoise waters of the western Caribbean, lies the peaceful British
Overseas Territory known as the Cayman Islands. Consisting of three islands just 480 miles
south of Miami, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman remain our little piece of
paradise. Blessed with sun-kissed beaches and waters teeming with fish flecked with gold,
the Cayman Islands offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. The three
islands are limestone outcroppings, the tops of a submarine mountain range called the
Cayman Ridge, which extends west southwest for the Sierra Maestra range off the southeast
part of Cuba to the Misteriosa Bank near Belize. The islands lack rivers or streams
because of the porous nature of the limestone rock. It is this lack of runoff which gives
the surrounding Caribbean Sea exceptional visibility, often well over 120 ft. Between the
Cayman Islands and Jamaica lies the deepest part of the Caribbean, the Cayman Trough,
which is over four miles deep. South of Cayman is the Bartlett Deep where depths of over
18,000 ft. have been recorded. All three islands are surrounded by healthy coral reefs
which lie at the top of dramatic walls and drop-offs close to shore, creating ideal
conditions for diving and sportfishing.

Sisterislands
The Cayman Islands(Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman), a trio of three islands
situated 150 miles south of Cuba and 180 miles west of Jamaica, are world-renowned for the
magnificent coral reefs and awe-inspiring coral walls surrounding them. Grand Cayman is,
by far, the most well known of the three islands, but her sisters, Cayman Brac and Little
Cayman, have become world famous for their spectacular wall diving and the refined sense
of relaxed Caribbean life they offer.

Government portal of Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands is a parliamentary democracy with judicial, executive and legislative
branches. The present constitution, which came into effect on 22 August 1972, provides for
the government of the Cayman Islands as a British Dependent Overseas Territory. It is the
third written constitution issued for the Islands by the British Crown since 1959, though
there is a history of over 160 years of representative government. The Islands'
constitution has evolved as the population and economy has grown; however, Cayman has not
moved to the stage where there is a chief minister. The Islands pride themselves on having
an independent judiciary, emphasising that the Grand Court was established by the
Constitution. In many forms of parliamentary government, executive and legislative
branches are not totally separate. In the Cayman Islands, the people elect the members of
the legislature, and the legislature elects the majority of the Executive Council (ExCo).

Scuba diving
The three islands of the Cayman Islands are the exposed top of an underwater mountain.
Underwater, the sides of this mountain are quite steep, vertical in some places, within as
little as a few hundred meters from shore. In addition to the expected coral reefs,
colorful fish, and other underwater creatures, this "wall diving" provides
something extra-ordinary for scuba divers. The tourism industry on the Cayman Islands
caters to divers, with many resorts and condominium complexes having in-house diving
operations offering course work, daily excursions, SCUBA Equipment sales and rentals.
Grand Cayman: The diving on Grand Cayman is divided roughly into 4 areas; Seven Mile Beach
and the Northwest Point, The North Wall, The South Side, and The East End. Because of the
prevailing south-east winds, it is rare to dive the South Side dive sites.
